Powerful Plants

Long before modern medicine, herbal medicine ruled the world of healing and wellness. Even though herbalism became less popular as scientific breakthroughs were made, medicinal herbs and plants are still found in modern treatments of some of the world's most common complaints.

Because we love the power of plants here at Potyque, we thought we’d put together some of our favourite plants and herbs that are still being used for wellness in the 21st century.

Echinacea
The leaf, stalk and root of the Echinacea plant have all been used to treat colds and flus and has been known to be used in minor wound healing. It is a member of the daisy flower, with its pinky-purple petals and daisy-like appearance. It is most commonly found in Eastern and central North America.

Garlic
A favourite in most delicious meals, garlic root contains antioxidants and is a great addition to any meal to add not just flavour, but also an extra layer of goodness. The full benefit of including more garlic in your diet is still being researched but it’s known to boost our immune system and thought that it could be used in the treatment and prevention of a few well-known diseases.

Ginger
Ginger is most commonly known for its anti-nausea properties, often being recommended to people who suffer with motion sickness or even women who are pregnant who are trying to navigate morning sickness. Drinking ginger tea is a great way to explore the effects of ginger on nausea, or include it in your morning smoothie for a healthy kick start to your day.

Milk Thistle
Milk Thistle is a plant that originated in the Mediterranean and has been trialled with treatment against certain liver conditions. Although research is still being carried out around it’s true medicinal benefits, Milk Thistle has shown some very promising results in treating a variety of illnesses.

Valerian Root
Valerian root is a native plant from Europe and Asia and has been used for centuries in aiding sleep. You can buy valerian root supplements and even tea from your local supermarket, to help improve the quality of your sleep.

Turmeric
If you love to frequent fancy coffee shops, you may have noticed the emergence of ‘Gold Lattes’ or ‘Turmeric Lattes’ popping up over the last few years. Turmeric is most commonly used for inflammation. A It is often seen as one of the superfoods we need to include in our diet as it’s high in antioxidants. Turmeric shots are also on the increase, served as a small, concentrated drink.

Cannabis Plant
